Charles Wang made the decision yesterday to buy out the remaining 4 years on Alexei Yashin's contract...this cost them $17.63 Million. Wang is allowed to pay that over the next 8 years. $2.2 million will go against the salary cap over that time. In a statement Ted Nolan, coach of the Islanders said:
"It was a hard decision, but when push came to shove, it was the best decision for this organization to give Yash a nice, fresh start. For us, it's a new beginning. You start looking for new players to come in. There's a time for people to move, and we just felt it was the right time."

Margee, has already begun rejoicing.

It looks like the Maven was right, buying out Yashin is the first step in re-signing Smyth and making him captain.
The rejoicing hasn't yet begun!!!
But, is Smyth going to re-sign...IF..and that's a big IF he re-signs no doubt he will be Captain and will now be the heart and soul of the Isles....but only time will tell.
Looks more to me like the Isles are going after Gomez, Briere, or Drury.
I agree with you Matt...I'd say Drury more so than the others...but I dunno.
No matter who they get, by losing Yashin, the Isles break even. He was so much more of a detriment than a contributor by the end.
I still think they're going for Smyth, and that this was one of his conditions. I also don't think the Isles will sign him. Of the other trio, I would think that Drury would be the most likely of the three, owing to the Isles newly adopted gritty style and Drury's Connecticut roots.
