To Boo or Not to Boo

There is a growing problem in HSBC Arena. It is a booing problem. The team with the second best record in the NHL and best record in the East has found itself being booed with regularity at home. Strange days have come to Buffalo. Strange days indeed!

Is it just a sign of the times? Is it due to the finances of the game? Is it just that Buffalo fans, so starved for the cup, can't contain themselves? Are we just "bad" fans?

Well, we are not bad fans. I myself don't boo anyone, I find it pointless. My ten year old daughter takes pride in booing the Flyers unmercilessly (though Marty going there near killed her!). I guess I am more of an old timer. I save my energy to cheer the team on and get into the fun stuff. I'll let the other guy boo. So why do they boo?

I think it comes down to two things. Money and desperation. Sabres fan desperately want this team to win. There is a palpable hunger in the Arena. This is clearly the Sabres best chance to win it, ever. Add onto that the fact that players make more than ever and fans pay more than ever, plus spice it with alcohol, quick frustration and fear. Fear in the sense that maybe it is an illusion, maybe they aren't that good. Maybe we will get our hearts torn out...again.

All I can say is.... relax! This is a damned fine team. We have one of the best coaches, some of the best leaders in the league. This is our year. This is the Sabres best shot. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Leave booing for the other guy. Why?

Because, come June, the Sabres will raise Lord Stanley's cup. I guarantee it.
